iO is an end-to-end agency with a growing team of experts in communication and digital transformation. They provide strategy, creation, marketing and technology. I did my internship within the technology department. The technology team had multiple designers with each their specialty and worked on different projects. iO has multiple campuses within the Netherlands and also in other parts of the world.

About iO

Projects & Learnings

I worked on various projects. For one big project I worked individually on an internal project which was related to the onboarding at iO. In this project I did a lot of interviews together with a colleague from another service line. We oversaw the research and I was in charge of the design and later testing, which I did by myself. Further I worked with two other colleagues on a project for a design system. I did research and interviewed colleagues about this topic. Later we started with setting up the design system and finding the best way to do this.

I developed myself into a more professional designer. I found out how it is to work in a company, and to work with different colleagues also from different service lines. For example I learned to pay more attention to spacing, consistency, mobile first design and by doing this delivering your work better for the developers. My colleagues also helped me with reflecting, asking for feedback and getting out of my comfort zone.  For example I had some feedback sessions, and besides at the designers share meeting, people showed their work and learnings. I got better at explaining and justifying my designs choices. Besides step by step I accomplished taking more initiatives by myself, and I got better at planning important moments and taking care of the proces. Other learning goals were making choices which was sometimes hard but I had to do this because others were also waiting for your work and there was a planning.

In addition, I expanded my knowledge by following a UX writing training and going to a CRO meet up day in Rotterdam at the campus. And this knowledge from the CRO meetup we also discussed in the designer share meeting because not everyone could attend the meetup in Rotterdam.

Conclusion

All in all it was a journey where I learned a lot. I got to apply my knowledge and experiece from school for the first time in work context. I grew as as a proffesional designer by learning from my colleagues, working together and asking for feedback. And besides I got out of my comfort zone.
